European Studies / Music Program

May 11 - June 18, 2011

The Summer Session at Salzburg College offers an introduction to various aspects of the Austrian and European culture.

Most courses emphasize the special opportunities provided by the Salzburg setting. Field experience including visits to historical sites, to cultural and professional institutions and the attendance of musical events connstitute an important part of the program.

The Courses

  • German language studies at Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels (3 hrs)
  • Understanding Austria: History, Politics and Culture (3hrs)
    From the Habsburg empire to the modern state.
  • Austrian Literature and Culture (3 hrs)
    An examination of 20th century Austrian literature against the background of the country's history, politics and culture.
  • The European Union (3 hrs)
    An introduction to the process and institutions of European political and economic integration.
  • The Mozart Project (3hrs)
    Personal study proejct combining research and performance. For Music majors.
  • Music History (3 hrs)
    An introduction to the musical heritage of Europe from the Classical Period to the 20th Century.
  • Music Performance (3 hrs)
    Private instruction for music majors - practice facilities are provided.

No specific courses are made a requirement during the summer session. Students can choose freely from the courses offered. A minimum of 6 credit hours is recommended. For a course load above 6 credits the approval from Salzburg College and the home university is necessary. For prerequisites, please see individual course descriptions.

Field Trips

A four-day trip to Vienna, Austria's historical capital, will provide a broad range of experiences related to history, art, music, and modern life. In addition, a variety of local field trips constitute an integrated part of the academic program. There is also some time for independent travel on weekends.

To maximize the cultural involvement, students live in Austrian homes where they also take their breakfasts and dinners.

Family accommodations are normally reserved for students up to the age of 26. Other accommodations can be made available at request.

Weekday lunches are provided by Salzburg College.

Cost

European Studies Program: $  to be announced soon

The cost includes:

  • tuition
  • room and board
  • local excursions and social events
  • a 4-day trip to Vienna
  • a day trip to the Salzkammergut. Cost does not include transatlantic transportation.

Music Program: $  to be announced soon

As above, including music performance instruction.

 

Additional program costs may be added on part of your home institution or Salzburg College partner.
